Both options show the same CarPlay. The difference starts when you get in and out of the car five times a day.

Wired CarPlay

Wired CarPlay is what manufacturers have been fitting since roughly 2016. The phone connects with a USB cable and the screen shows navigation, music and messages. It works reliably, the phone charges and there is no lag.

There is one drawback, but you meet it every day: the cable. Every time you get in you have to pull it out and plug it in, and unplug it when you leave. After a year the connector works loose, and cheaper cables start dropping the connection on a bumpy road.

Wireless CarPlay

Wireless CarPlay works over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The phone can stay in your pocket or bag — once you are in the car the system connects automatically in about five seconds.

That is the only real difference in use. But it changes habits: you stop thinking about the cable, and navigation simply appears on the screen when you start the engine.

Where the catch is

Wireless connections come in two kinds, and this is exactly where cheap adapters disappoint:

The 2.4 GHz band is crowded in town — every router, wireless earphone and radar detector shares the same channel. So an adapter that works perfectly in your own yard starts stuttering on a busy city avenue.

And if the car has no CarPlay at all?

Then choose a module that connects to the factory screen. It sits between the screen and the factory wiring, so the steering wheel buttons, the iDrive or MMI knob and the reversing camera keep working. The screen does not need replacing.

If there is no screen at all, the universal option is SmartDash display on the dashboard, powered from the 12 V socket.

What to choose

• You have a factory screen without CarPlay → a wireless module for the factory screen.
• You have wired CarPlay → AI Box, which makes it wireless and adds Android apps.
• There is no screen at all → the SmartDash display, fitted in five minutes.
